Maldives: October 23 - 29

Nico and I spent about a week in the Maldives for SCUBA diving.  We stayed at the Kurumba Village resort on the North Male atoll.

Clearly it's hard to have a Three Amigos dive trip without the third amigo (Jerry), who couldn't make it on this trip.  However, he has seen the error of his ways and assures us that he will miss no future adventures.  Which is good, because all the paperwork required to revoke one's Amigo status is a real pain in the neck.

Looking back over my dive log, the consensus about the resort was: good food, good dive operation, nice accommodations (except for intermittent hot water).  The diving was generally excellent, with one big exception: bad visibility.  We happened to visit during the two months of bad vis due to plankton growth, resulting in visibility in the 45 - 60 foot range.  However, the big upside to the plankton was that it attracts manta rays!

We ran across a Manta ray cleaning station with four or five huge Mantas circling around.  We hung out there for 15 - 20 minutes just watching these graceful creatures flying around.  Their wingspan was 8 - 10 feet.  Amazing.
